an.ti.bod.y – Josephine Pittman

By art

After a decade showing her work in group exhibitions and showcases in galleries throughout Australia, award-winning local ceramic artist Josephine Pittman is proud to present an.ti.bod.y, her debut solo show.

Her work models the internal battleground of the human body through porcelain handbuilt sculptural forms. It playfully interrogates notions of disease and the microscopic detail of what it means to be human, as the body remains locked in a constant struggle against the 21st century’s bombardment of external invaders. Josephine’s work will take a microscopic view of the battle between antibodies and the forces of infection and stage it in larger sculptural form

an.ti.bod.y opens on Friday February 12 at 6.30pm, and runs until February 26 11am -4pm Tues to Sat
or by appointment josephinepittman {at} me.com.
Central Institute of Technology Showcase Gallery is at the corner of Beaufort and Aberdeen Sts, Northbridge.

Radio Dept have a new album coming out

By tuesday

If this is news to you, then get excited. If it isn’t then continue your wave of excitement. Radio Dept are a good band. Some people totally <3 them, I wouldn’t say I am a devotee or anything, but they are definitely solid. In fact, that second album they released was orss. I liked it more than the first one. Anyway, watch out for the third one.

The press release ends with: “Now, the 20th of January 2010, as we’re sitting here with “Clinging to a scheme” in our hands we’ve waited four long years for this new album to materialize. And we only need a simple press on Play and to know it’s been worth every second. The band has combined the most unequalled components from their previous albums “Lesser matters” and “Pet grief” with soul guitars, P-funk, glittering, distorted synthesizers, cut/paste- beats, 70’s futuristic orchestra sounds and sounds you don’t know what they are. Things you’ve never heard before. “Clinging to a scheme” is way beyond pleasing – it’s absolutely breathtaking. -”

Which I guess is all true of the album, but the bottom line is if you liked Radio Dept before, this will just strengthen your liking. In terms of ‘getting into the band’ then track down a copy and go for it, because when I played it I was like “Yeah.” In a really accomplished way, as I had anything to do with anything. I can’t really describe it any further since my room mate is listening to Mos Def+NateDogg-Oh No, and it is kind of cutting my train of thought, the new songs are “said to be influenced by minimalistic post-punk, krautrock, repetitive “motorik” beat and ambient noise.”

This is one of the best releases that will come out of Sweden this year.

Btw it’s called Clinging To A scheme, oh wait I said that before.

Last Chance Studio recently hosted the premier solo showing of Timothy Rollin‘ and his work. Utilising both ink on paper and aerosol, the work showed an approach without any strict guidelines in terms of medium. Entitled “Perth City Surreal”, the pieces highlighted some of the stranger elements of this emerging artist’s home town.
