Art by Ben Kovacsy

From the 14th until the 17th of January 2010, fourteen innovative contemporary artists from Australia and Europe will step out of the gallery to exhibit in the open public space of Stirling Gardens in Perth’s CBD!

Since its creation in 1845 for Sir James Stirling, Stirling Gardens have been witness to unfathomable changes taking place around it: from horses and carts on dusty roads to motor cars, skyscrapers, and corporate slogans, forming what we know today as Perth’s CBD. In timeless spaces like Stirling Gardens we are able to trace the progress of our landscape and with it the evolution of cultural identity.

Garden//Art//Action will transform Stirling Gardens into an agora; an open public space for expressive exchange of acts, ideas and opinions. Employing a wide range of disciplines, from temporary installations, subtle interventions and performance. Each artist will produce site-responsive artworks that will materially and conceptually interrogate ways of engaging with today’s landscape. Collectively the works will assume the importance of taking action in a shifting and social, political and environmental climate.

To celebrate the event a Public Picnic Launch will be held on January 14 from 11am – 5:30pm. This will be a unique and not to be missed event also featuring live entertainment by some of Perth’s very talented musicians; Felicity Groom, Milly James, Simone and Girlfunkle, Rachel and Henry Climb a Tree and Géraldine. Installation of the work will be documented and exhibited in the Council House Foyer from the 14th to the 22nd of January.

Participating Artists:
Cyril Aboucaya (Fr), Georgina Criddle (Au), Dana Engfer (De), Claire Fouquet (Fr), Benjamin
Kovacsy (Au), Bennett Miller (Au), Steven Morgana (Au), Renaud Perriches (Fr), Eva-Maria
Raab (At), Antoine Renard (Fr), Sharman Riegger (De), Lena Inken Schaefer (De), David
Thomson (Au), Rick Vermey (Au)

“My name is Pedro Matos and I am a 20 year old Painter/Street Artist. I am currently living, working and studying in Lisbon, Portugal.
I’ve grown up as a skateboarder and at the age of 16 that made the connection to Art and I started painting and drawing. Both of my paintings and street pieces are about people, society, culture, politics, and all the connections made between them. My style and aesthetics are a blend between the so called traditional fine art/figurative painting and urban art and urban and pop aesthetics and references. I love to travel and I hope to keep doing it and show my work worldwide.”

Name: Pedro Matos

I live in: Lisbon, Portugal

My art is about: Humanity, Society, and Culture. It has been interesting to explore those who usually wouldn’t be. Unnoticed people, unappreciated, downtrodden and forgotten.

Currently working on: Some Street Art pieces to paste up and paint around Europe and I have also been painting for future shows.

My day/night job is: I am just a painter and a student. I don’t have any other kind of “real” job at the moment.

Would like to learn: How to fly.

My studio is: The most beautiful mess I have ever seen.

Love music by: All kinds of different artists such as Amy Winehouse, Beastie Boys, Justice, MSTRKRFT, Steed Lord, Rusko, Crookers, Edith Piaf, Beatles, Beethoven, Sex Pistols, and the list goes on and on..

Inspired by: Life. Music. Good Movies. People. Especially the ones who can do various kinds of activities and succeed at both. People like Ed Templeton, Chad Muska, Dave Kinsey, AC form Steed Lord, and so on.

I love to: Walk barefoot.

I hate to: Have any kind of routines.

What question would you ask other artists: Would you like to go out for a drink?

Answer you question: Sure.. I think I forgot my wallet though.

Would like to travel to: Barcelona, LA, NY, Rome and Tibet are my next top 5.

My favorite artist is: Living artists such as Conor Harrington, Antony Micallef, Anthony Lister, Ian Francis, Banksy, Faile, (most of Lazarides and Kinsey/Desforges artists actually). All time favorites include Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Warhol, Basquiat, Arcimboldo, Modigliani, Van Dyck, Vermeer, etc.. the list is endless!

Next exhibit: Group show in Lisbon on July 3rd. I’m also working for some more group shows and a solo show but there aren’t any dates yet.

My favorite website is: Fecalface, Juxtapoz, Arrested Motion.. etc

My website is at: www.pedromatos.org

Born 1980 in London, Chloe Early grew up in Cork, Ireland. Since graduating from NCAD Dublin in 2003 she has pursued her painting practice and exhibited in Cork, Dublin, London and Los Angeles with upcoming shows in San Francisco and New York. In 2004 Early moved to London which is where she now lives and works. She is represented by Stolen Space gallery.

Urban scenes form the backbone of the paintings which aim to transgress states of dream and reality bringing together an improbable selection of imagery. The lushness of a garden of Eden is contrasted with the grit of a post industrial building boom. These landscapes are populated with figures – the figures have an air of oblivion -they are lost in a dream of perfection and oblivious to their surroundings. Despite the urban subjects the paintings always retain a dream like quality, a soft focus.

“My current works are oil paintings on linen and aluminium. Large scale painterly montages, I work with an abstracted urban landscape background placing interchangeable motifs: divers, balloons, stars, birds, planes, herds of animals, always hinting at the opposing themes of apocalypse and redemption.”
