I’ve been really slack recently, dw am turning stuff around now, think of me as that baboon that holds Simba over everyone @ Pride Rock, just a lot less accomplished/majestic/smart.
Simba, is my selection of fun/good things that will be happening over the summer.

1. Thee Oh Sees – 8 Jan @ Amplifier.
The only excuse you have for not going to this concert is being out of the country (I am, and totally bummed out about not making this one), this will be a great show to attend. If you aren’t going you are probably a 26 year old jerk; “they sound too downmarket for me” don’t be like that.

2. The Necks @ the Bakery, late Jan.
Bottom line here is, the Necks are great, and from Australia. Something to be very proud of and to have a fantastic experience at. If you aren’t going to this you are probably 22 years old and have vanilla sex with yr teenage girlfriend while listening to a collection of sub-par drivel that you DL’d from the latest “Indie/Rock Playlist!”.

3. Lots of people @ Soundwave @ somewhere not that close. In late Jan. I think. March.
Millencolin playing the entire Pennybridge Pioneers album is mentally good. Seriously folks, add that to Fucked Up + One Day as a Lion, and yr doing very good. But then put MELVINS into the mix and the equation just gets out of hand. The sad thing about this is that it costs heaps, I probably won’t go because I don’t have a million samoleons. But note that after it’s over and we are sitting around listening to Melvins, we will all collectively regret not going.

4. Os Mutantes @ Beck’s Music Box closing night.
Anyone else totally lose their shit when this got announced? I can officially tell you that this will rock. Don’t kid yourself by doing anything else on this evening, it’s like Sunday 6th of March from memory. If you don’t know of Os Mutantes, start with their self titled first album – now.

5. Clean Living festival? Or something like that.
I really have no details of this, and only have word of mouth resources. Here’s what I know, it is a small festival type thing, in Feb, or around Feb, being organised by a feller from Clean Living, it will span a week, with 3-4 performances per night, at kurb gallery. It’s very admirable for anyone to put on such an event. I have no idea who is playing, but I imagine it will be very worthwhile and consist of interesting performances. NB: None of this is factually verified.

6. Picnics and beaches @ various coastal locations and national parks.
Everybody make sure you put sunscreen on and wear a hat. Not kidding. There needs to be more people wearing proper hats, that keep sun off you. And not make you look like a 17 year old dickhead.

7. Honourable Mentions:
- Southbound would be fun if you can be bothered/have a million dollars
- BDO would be good if only to see Grinderman
- Any one of the Bang on a Can performances @ PIAF will be great, Bang on a Can deserves much more respect than it gets.
- Fresh fruit. Does anyone have an awesome tip as to where I should buy?

Let me be the first to tell you: it’s really lush. The electronics are very well programmed and have a strange way of walking a fine line by being gestural and well orchestrated. The release is out on Kingem Records – a little label started by Mark Zonda.

It is the very first release on the label, but now they have since released another, to all the DIY nuts out there I recommend getting on this stuff straight away so that you can have a label’s discography!

Having said all that, the album has its quiet and introverted moments, namely My Hidden Fears, which I would say is my favourite track on the album, but is not necessarily the quintessential Stars in Coma number. Theres a song called NYE which is number 9.

Anyway the album is available on iTunes and through the website, as a CDR, with gorgeous artwork made by Håkan Carlsson and Mark Zonda. Staying true to the national Swedish identity, this is catchy indie-pop that will stay on your music player for extended periods. Check them here.

Last night I went to the Hip E club, for a co-worker’s going away party, needless to say, it was not a good evening. Every girl there looked like they could have been a porn star, in a implied STD kind of way. On the subject of blurring sex and modern culture:

A lot of tape labels have some sexually explicit named bands signed, here are 3 favourites of mine:

- My Sexual Dad

- Child Pornography

- Sex Worker

All of them have really fucked connotations, and they make pretty fucked up music too, so check the out and see what you think. Mainly just tape reel/reverb stuff. Also I’m guessing searching them on Google might be a bit rough, so I’ll list a little more info to tame the search:

CP put out a split LP with Quem Quaeritis.

MSD have released heaps on Not Not Fun.

SW have a tape called Labour of Love. Or it might be Labor of Love, probably the latter, as I think they’re from the US.

The other weekend I saw various artists play (NB I am not talking about Jez and Super Hans’ band). One of them was Ourbonic Plague.

It was one guy sitting on a chair with a machine not a laptop) with wires plugged into it. I can’t find anything about him on the internet. And I have never seen the name on a poster either. You know what – I have no other information about this guy. Keeping that in mind… This did actually happen, and I swear he is real. Just found his web address – sorry folks! http://www.myspace.com/ourobonicplague there’s an extra ‘o’ in there.

That’s because I did the smart thing and bought his CD which is called [documents 2007-2010], it came in a DVD case. Come to think of it, that is kind of like buying a cassette tape that comes in a VHS cover… Anyway it is totally awesome but I don’t know what type of music you’d call it. Industrial, Noise, Experimental are a few words that might be thrown toward one’s understanding. There is no contact detail or any further information on the CD, just the track names.

In terms of a music recommendation I guess I am ‘doing a shit job’ but anyway, if you get anything out of reading this let it be: go and see Ourbonic Plague if you ever hear of him playing somewhere.

If you like 60s garage/psych and can track down any of their music I strongly recommend it. The thing is, the singer sounds so much like Thame Impala’s singer. I like Tame Impala too, I am looking forward to when their CD is out.

Back to Mourning Dayze, I have only heard one song of theirs, it’s called “Fly My Paper Airplane” Here is the only info I could find about it “(Kiderian 45115) 2:34 (196?) – B-side is “Sad Man’s Madness.” A decent psych/rock song with a driving organ throughout. Features a wild lengthy guitar lead in the middle. Maybe 67/68?” Anyway it’s good, very much inline with that era, but looking on their site, they seem cool.

Plus their band logo is AWESOME!

Anyone that puts it down because it’s “70f1″ spends too much time reading about music and not enough time actually listening. It’s really easy for anyone to diss noise/70f1, but therein lies it’s beauty. (If you need convincing look up Neon Tongues‘ Big Kids single – I have listened to that more than any other single ever) my point is home recording has been around forever it is how people without deals used to share music, of course now everyone has laptops and near studio quality can be achieved in the front room of ur house when everyone’s out.

For someone who hasn’t yet gotten it, the YAS Dudett (2007 Tour CD-R) by Ariel Pink is a really good starting point – It’s floating around on the internet somewhere – Work back from there, and even if you already have it, listen to it again.
