Joey Bates

By art

name: Joey Bates

i live in: Seattle, Washington, USA

my art is about: People, facial expression as language, plants, growth, tension, space, and line.

currently working on: Work for a show in June

i make art to: Breathe, function, work out my obsessive compulsive disorder and connect with others

my day/night job is: I’m a part time Manny… a male nanny

would like to learn: How to ride my bike with no hands so I can look super hip and take phone calls, not really.

my studio is: Very small. Someday I will be making enough money to find a bigger place and return to oil paints. I’m pretty content with having low overhead when it comes to expenses right now.

love music by: Recently I’ve been listening to Beirut, Camer Obscura, Damien Jurado, The Helio Sequence, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Great Lake Swimmers, Jens Lekman, Jenny Owen Youngs, The Pica Beats, J. Tillman, Local Natives, Fleet Foxes, Neko Case… to name a few.

inspired by: The people I know, the kids I work with, nature, my city and what I find beautiful

i love to: Ride my bicycle around the city, it’s my main mode of transport.

i hate to: be the bearer of bad news, but…

what question would you ask other artists: Can we be friends?

answer your question:  Yes.

would like to travel to: I would like to return to Australia and explore more of it. I spent a few days in Sydney and a few weeks in Melbourne in 2008 and I haven’t gotten over Australia. At the beginning of 2010 I went to Europe for the first time. I’m still in love with Australia.

my favorite artist is: I have a number of favorites, but there are two at the very top that I cannot deny, Luican Freud and Egon Schielle

next exhibit: Assemble Gallery in Seattle, they are tops ( http://www.assembleshop.com/)

my favorite website is: I have to say Flickr is an amazing site. I enjoy getting lost in other people’s images and making connections. I’ve recently started trading art and  clothing with other flickr members. You can see mine at http://www.flickr.com/photos/greenbeatle I try to limit my time on the interweb.
